Time Slip Page
Updated 12June1998

As you can see I have broken the times down so that we can see how modifications effected performance. In general, I didn't go to the track unless I had a mod to test out, and that is obvious by looking at the dates and mods.

In an effort to filter out variations in driving, and give some kind of meaningful data, I have included an average for each visit to the track. I've excluded certain runs from the averages because they would have skewed the numbers making them useless. Things such as passengers, bad launches and bad shifting choices do effect my times in a real manner, but they need to be ignored if we are to gleam any real info from the times concerning modification effects. Where I have excluded a run from the average it has been noted. If you have a problem with my choices feel free to make your case. I will listen. In some cases, the exclusion of times actually reduced the "perceived benefit" of a later mod. Remember I am just trying to make the comparisons valid, not make my times look better than they are. Otherwise, I wouldn't even have posted the "bad" times :)

Something to notice in the time slips from 31 Oct 97:
For those runs with which I had my new exhaust, you can see that I dropped my ET and raised my trap speed (93 to 95.5 mph) significantly. However, if you study things closely you will see that the speed gained in the last half of the run is nearly the same as before the exhaust install (18.86 to 19.5 mph), and that most of the speed I gained can be attributed to the first half of the run (72.8 to 76.1 mph). I have some excel spreadsheet charts that better illustrate this. I just haven't been bothered to put then on the web yet.

What Does this mean? . . . Well after talking with a few people who have been around longer than me, we all came to the same conclusion. With the small Garrett T25 turbo, there is very little top end power you can squeeze out of it. What this mean is any gains from exhaust and intake mods manifests themselves in better spool-up which only effect the first half of the track where all the shifting occurs. Someone asked me, "Could it just be that your shifting better?" Well that is possible but if you look at the other time slips you can see that my shifting is basically consistent, and that if you compare equal 60ft times with and without the exhaust the theory still hold true. Besides that is what the averages are for . . to try and eliminate variances in my driving. Not to mention that it doesn't take a brain surgeon to stay at WOT in 3rd gear till the finish line :) So a turbo upgrade is definitely the next step. Of course full porting of the exhaust manifold and O2 housing will also occur before the new turbo. This probably won't help the T25 much, but it will get the car ready for the new turbo, which just might be a ported 14b for money reasons unless I can find a used 16g or Super60/T28. I think I can get over 100 MPH and pull low 13's with just the 14b. Anyone else wanna take a guess??

UPDATE:

Ok so I now have the 16g. something a lot of you seem to have been waiting to here about. I will say this. It is FAST. But not as fast as it could be. to put it simply I AM RUNNING RICH . .VERY RICH. So rich that I ran a SLOWER trap at 20 psi than I did at 17 psi. I have an APEXi S-AFC on the way and access to CarComp the OBDII monitoring software, and plan on using them both to tune this baby just right. then I should be flying. I have also gotten into AutoX. I had a chance to drive with both the T25 and the 16g. I am not sure about clipped 16g's but this ported/unclipped 16g doesn't feel too bad on the track. There is no doubt my driving, tires and suspension (in that order) are holding me back more than the turbo :)

Note: I was having some really bad problems with controlling boost. I was getting bad bad creep and I even tried porting things more to no avail. It turned out to be my wastegate actuator rod was rubbing the lower heat shield. So for these runs I was getting slow slow spool and 16psi. I tested for 3 hours to get the bleeder/restrictor combo to not creep and spool relatively well. Spool still sucked, and it along with creep, we both dependant on what rpm I went WOT.

Also my 2nd gear was trashed but I didn't know this till my first run at the track. On the street it worked fine, until after the strip. It died faster and faster and 2 weeks later I had a new tranny and a new OEM clutch disc and pressure plate. The plate and the disc were pretty well beat up but still pulled me some nice launches on this day (once I learned how to launch again :)

35 .504 2.042 5.996 9.119 77.57   14.160 98.69 More fun with launching. Hey it has been a few months. OK now 2nd gear is just toast. For all runs after this 2nd gear grinds like a bitch and I am double clutching
36 .574 1.901 5.727 8.877     13.781 99.08 Ahh . .back under 2.0 . . .AND a new record (ET and trap) . . things are looking up. Not bad for slow spool and double clutching 2nd gear. I raced a 1998 z28 on this run. His friend came up to one of my friends afterwards and asked "WTF does your friend have in there? A V6 turbo . . . he just SMOKED my buddy and he has a drag rear end." . . . his buddy had run a 14.260@102.58

Um . . . let just say this new clutch minus the clutch restrictor GRABS . . . I couldn't launch the car worth a damn. Every time I bogged no matter what. I need to slow my foot down now that the restrictor isn't doing it for me. I had to leave early so I only got two runs in. :(

43 .422 2.062 5.908 9.091 77.07 11.753 14.052 97.76 This is at 20 psi and 114 race gas. I was Running VERY VERY RICH . .like 1.0 on the voltmeter. Looks like the rewired fuel pump is holding up well.
44 .519 1.918 5.721 8.884 77.721 11.533 13.839 98.07 OK, now that is a little better . . . but I'm still running slow than the first time. Again 20psi. It has cooled off and I am now getting fuel cut.
45 .567 1.921 5.963 9.249 75.99 11.976 14.248 98.22 ARRRGGGGG. Lowered the boost to 19 psi to help fuel cut. I am still getting it but I stayed on the gas and it just cut once; enough to lower boost and carry on, then cut again on the shift.
46 .554 2.098 5.999 9.171 78.21 11.841 14.107 98.70 This was at 17 psi. No fuel cut and NO DROP IN SPEED. Do you see now why I need a fuel controller. Fuel ratio is still 1.0
47 .683 2.098 6.001 9.187 77.38 11.828 14.063 101.56 Ok this was at like 16 psi and I stayed in 3rd gear to the line. I was this || close to the rev limiter. I think it was a timing error, BUT later track times are close enough to think maybe the car was just running a bit leaner and all the planets happened to be in line

Um . . . need I say how happy I was :) The only problem . . . I kept running against all these FAST purpose built-trailer queen drag cars. I'm not talking some mustang that can't idle with slicks. . . I'm talking amateur NHRA drag cars. You can just imagine the how it feelum . .i have NO idea dus to run against a 9 SECOND CAR. He was at the end of the track as I was passing the 1/8 mile marker and was going 139.77 MPH. Did I mention he pulled a 1.324 launch. It was truly comical. That just summed up he cars I ran against. No one really seemed to want to race me. they would line up behind me rather than fill up the lane next to me. Coincidence ?
